5-26 fishing report

Thursday, May 27th, 2010

Started out with a trip to the east side of Sarasota bay. Pulled some Spotted sea trout off the first flat. Then we fished a good snook hole, But It had been taken over by overslot redfish. After a few of these line rippers. My customer wanted to show his wife what a Tarpon looked like and see about hooking one.. I was happy to please, we made our run. On the way I spotted 2 manatees in clear water, so his wife really enjoyed watching them for a bit. The water was calm and clear. Schools of bait fish and the great spotted eagle rays effortlessly glided just under the top of the water. We could see a Tarpon break here and there, we just continued to observe. Then 2 fish came to the surface, I could see the dark spot under them. This was the way we wanted it. As I positioned the boat to intercept them a pleasure craft came down the beach and yep a fish broke the surface about 25 feet before the boat went over them.. So again the wait was on. After about 5 min. I could see a dark spot in the water closer to us. This might be the fish I said, I casted a bait just past the spot and as I was handing the rod to my client. I was just able to get a hand on the bottom of the rod as it went by me. By the time I got both hands on the rod we had a 100+ pound Tarpon in the air. This was a great fish, it jumped 5 times higher then our heads in the first 10 min. We could hear the people on the beach behind us hooting and hollering everytime the fish left the water. About 30 min into the fight and a mile off the beach now. My customer has had enough, the fish has come by the boat giving us a great view of it. We broke it off. And started heading back to the dock. Trout, redfish and a tarpon, it had been a great 3 hours of fishing. His wife said, she enjoyed it so much she wishes she had come with him when he asked her before, she will be back. She never touched a fishing rod, but the peace of the water and the things she got to see were amazing.

The Tarpon are here, in the last 2 days we have hooked 6. Large seaturtles and The greatSpotted Eagle Rays are running the beach add Tarpon breaching and it is a great trip. Have not done much for Bay fishing this week. But have been listening to the drag scream for hours, I hear it in my sleep. Explains why I am waking up with a smile..lol.. If you do not know, these fish are 5 to 7 ft long, 80 to 150 lbs. of silver jumping fighting fish. They break the surface to gulp air. We also have the Snook on the beaches and redfish on the flats.. It is just a amazing trip…
